Scholarships

In addition to scholarship opportunities provided by the University and the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Philosophy and Religion offers two of its own for students majoring in Philosophy or Religious Studies: the Charles T. Davis Scholarship in Philosophy and Religion Endowment and the Richard T. Guy Endowment for Philosophy.

Read further for descriptions of the opportunities available at the departmental, college, and university levels and apply through the University's Appalachian Scholarship Application Portal (ASAP), which automatically matches students with scholarships for which they are eligible. (A helpful video on the application process can be viewed here [requires AppState email account login].)

Applications for 2024-2025 scholarships will be accepted until 11:59 PM on February 7, 2024.

Departmental Scholarships

  • Charles T. Davis Scholarship in Philosophy and Religion Endowment

To provide support to an exemplary student who has declared as a Philosophy or Religion major. The student awarded this scholarship must submit an essay that describes how their major supports their personal and vocational goals. While the scholarship is intended to recognize students who are highly successful academically, the faculty selecting the recipient will also take into account the student’s ability, creativity, curiosity, determination and exceptional accomplishments.

  • Richard T. Guy Endowment for Philosophy

To provide scholarship support to undergraduate students who are majoring in Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy and Religion within the College of Arts and Sciences. Preference in the selection of recipients shall accrue to students who (1) are participating in the Department of Philosophy and Religion’s Departmental Honors Program; (2) are not already receiving full scholarship support and (3) demonstrate financial need, although verification of need (FAFSA) is not required. If there are no eligible recipients who are participating in the Department of Philosophy and Religion’s Departmental Honors Program, then preference shall accrue to students who otherwise meet the above criteria.

The closing date for both department scholarships is usually in February each year.
