Departmental Honors

Departmental Honors Program

Students majoring in Philosophy or Religious Studies may pursue Departmental Honors in their major. Students may apply to pursue Departmental Honors by completing the Departmental Honors Application and submitting it to the Department of Philosophy and Religion, I.G. Greer 114. 

Requirements for Departmental Honors

  • 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA 

  • 6 credits in departmental Honors courses (at any course level) 

  • 3 credits in Honors thesis (PHL 4510 or REL 4510), directed by a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy & Religion, with an additional reader from another Department appropriate to the topic chosen by the student

Honors course sections at the 1000-level and 2000-level are designated with section numbers in the 400’s (e.g., PHL 1000-411; REL 2020-411).

Courses at the 3000-level and 4000-level may be taken toward completion of the Departmental Honors program by agreement with the instructor for the course and completion of a Departmental Honors Course Contract.

Students graduating with Departmental Honors will be conferred an honorary graduation cord, which may be worn with their regalia at commencement. Following tradition, cords for Philosophy are royal blue and cords for Religious Studies are red.
