Honors Program

Requirements for Departmental Honors

  • 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA
  • 6 credits in departmental Honors courses (including at least 3 credits at the 3000-level or 4000-level)
  • 3 credits in Honors thesis (PHL 4510 or REL 4510)
  • Grade of ‘B’ or better and 3.4 or higher GPA in departmental Honors courses, including the Honors thesis

Students majoring in Philosophy or Religious Studies may pursue Honors in their major. Students may apply to pursue Honors by completing the Departmental Honors application and submitting it to the Department of Philosophy and Religion, Greer 114.

To graduate with Honors in Philosophy or Religious Studies, a student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or above, and must complete at least 9 hours of work in departmental Honors courses in the major with a grade of ‘B’ (3.0 grade points) or better in each of these courses and a GPA of 3.4 or above in these courses. These courses must include at least 3 credits at the 3000- or 4000-level and PHL 4510 or REL 4510, Senior Honors Thesis.

Honors course sections at the 1000-level and 2000-level are designated with section numbers in the 400’s (e.g., PHL 1000-410; REL 1010-411).

Courses at the 3000-level and 4000-level may be taken toward completion of the Honors program by agreement with the instructor for the course and completion of an Honors course contract.
